Understanding Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a cognitive-behavioral treatment originally developed for individuals with chronic emotion dysregulation and self-destructive behaviors. DBT focuses on balancing acceptance and change strategies—helping clients accept themselves as they are while still working toward desired improvements. It teaches four core skill areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.
