What is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a mindfulness-based therapeutic approach that helps individuals reduce the impact of painful thoughts and emotions by changing their relationship to them rather than eliminating them. It emphasizes psychological flexibility—being present, open, and engaged in behaviors aligned with one’s values. ACT teaches acceptance skills to make space for difficult internal experiences and cognitive defusion techniques to reduce the power of unhelpful thoughts. Values clarification is a central component, guiding clients toward meaningful action even in the presence of discomfort.
